At a recent BFU meeting the Steering Committee discussed campaigning for full reinstatement of APR and BPR. Some larger farms are still at risk if their business value is over the £2.5million per person allowance, and this is particularly problematic if there's elderly family members.
To mitigate this, the BFU have been liaising with opposition parties to see what mitigation can be put in place if those parties were to win the next general election. As well as reversing the tax, one ask is that anyone caught with an inheritance tax liability after 5th April 2026 could be pardoned from the remainder of their 10 annual payments if an opposition party won the next general election.
BFU are pleased to say we have received a very positive response from both the Conservatives and Reform, with the Liberal Democrats insisting Labour should reverse the whole policy and return to an unlimited allowance. BFU Chair George Brown has spent a lot of time in London building relationships with all the political parties. George has also secured a meeting with Farming Minister Dame Angela Eagle to discuss current farming issues.
The BFU will continue to lobby and do the best for our members. We are also working on other mitigation measures and will inform in due course.
